Most of Chain Restaurants have a menú with picutures and prices (or sometimes with English), so you know what you are ordering. (although sometimes the picture deceives you, and you get a very small portion). Since most of restaurants do not give you a box to go for the leftovers, you should consume at the table, and if you are still hungry, you order more later).
More traditional restaurants, or mom-and-pop stores may have a sample showcase (made of wax) in front of the store entrance with price. (see below)
Or You can gamble your japanese ability to order. That is a part of fun travelling in Japan, particularly when you visit a rural area.
If you are struggling with communication, I am sure someone around will help you .
Finally these menus below are your LAST STRAW.
Go to familiar American Chain stores such as McDonalds, BK, KFC, Subway etc, and try something you cannot get in the USA.
For example, On the menú from McDonalds, #07 says Teriyaki McBurger 590 yen (for set = comes with a small drink and small fries), #08 Shrimp Fillet-O-Fish 630 Yen.
On the menú from Subway, Look carefully at the English menú in green such as Proscuitto & Mascapone , or Shrimp & Avocado.
Those will be the small food adventures within your comfort zone.
