Objetivos: to describe your town or city, your home, and distinguish the use of Estar from Ser.
In order to meet this objective, do 5 activites over and over. No assessment to follow now, but this theme will come again in Chapter 5.
- Lee esta explicación en inglés, aprende las conjugaciones de SER y ESTAR de meoria.
We have learned to use SER (be verb) when we are talking about physical feature or characteristcs.
When telling the location of someone or something, we use another be- verb ESTAR. (Do not use the verb SER)
In Chapter 4 we will study more about ESTAR, comparing with SER to learn the differences betwee these two be-verbs which is very difficult concept for the English speakers.
When telling the location of someone or something, we use another be- verb ESTAR. (Do not use the verb SER)
In Chapter 4 we will study more about ESTAR, comparing with SER to learn the differences betwee these two be-verbs which is very difficult concept for the English speakers.
SER and Estar is very complicated for English speakers because this distinguishment does not exist in English. People try to use Acronym such as DOCTOR (ser) and PLACE(estar) that will guide you the usage but sometimes it is not always clear.
Situation like... You usually think Juan is not handsome and his characteristic and description (in your head) is "not handsome" Juan no es guapo. (SER) But, today you and Juan are attending to your mutual friend's wedding. Juan dressed up in a sharp-looking Best Man's Tux. You thought "wow Juan looks great, so handsom (today)." with this condition. Juan está guapo (hoy )(ESTAR). So, even decribing the same person Juan, the use of verb SER or ESTAR changes, depending upon what the speaker perceives. After looking at Juan at the wedding, your opinion of Juan has forever changed, and now when you decribe Juan, it is ... Juan es guapo (SER). and you ended up with dating him, and marring him. Who knows. |
- Haz este ejercicio. Escucha mi pista (hint).

* Below two articles are your reading assignments for the culture. 1) about Retiro Park, 2) compare and contrast about renting an apartment in Madrid and Mexico.
Lee este artículo sobre " El Parque de Buen Retiro" en Madrid.
jardín, los madrileños, feria, ajedres, concierto clásico
Covering over 125 hectares and comprising more than 15,000trees, El Retiro Park is a green oasis in the heart of Madrid. It is a very important park for the people of Madrid (los madrileños). You will find all kinds of interesting monumnets and gardens, including the Jardín de Vivaces, the Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez (Andalusian-inspired gardens), Rosaleda Rose garden and the Parterre Franczees, which holds a Mexican conifer that is nearly 400 years old and is believed to be Madrid's oldest tree.
I remember there were so many events such as free classical concert (el concierto clásico) , new/used book fair (Feria de Libro), puppet show, giant chess (ajedres) for kids, and more.
These numbers correpond the pictures below.
Renting an apartment?
One website is for "rentar un departamento o depa (en peso)" in Mexico City , and another website is for "alquilar un apartamento (en euro) " in Madrid. Notice that there are two different ways to say "rent an apartment". Receiving influences from English from USA, Mexico tends to have more vocabulary similar to English. For example, computadora (México) vs ordernador (Spain), elevador (México) vs ascensor (Spain), sala de emergencia (México) vs sala de urgencia (Spain), ordenar (to order) (México) vs pedir (Spain).
Right now the exchange rate is about US$ 1 = 20.46 Mexican pesos (or US$733 = MXpesos 15000) whereas US$1 = 0.97 Euros. (or US$1232 = 1200 euros).
(A mí me gustan los barrios de Coyoacán y Tlalpan en Ciudad de México. En Madrid no conozco muy bien, pero me gustaría vivir en el barrio de Salamanca porque está cerca del parque Retiro).

Objective: Learn about the important year 1492 in Spain. / Learn about the Arabic influence in Spanish language.
- Arabic influenced words in Spanish
2) Read attached 1492 sheet here.
3) Why the year 1492 is so important to the history of Spain? Comment about your discovery (yes you can google, you can share your discovery and what you know, your opinion, on Discussion forum), and please ACTIVELY discuss with classmates in English. One comment to one classmate is NOT enough.
Spanish has many words that begins with al----. For example, alfombra, almohada, almendra (almond), aldea (small village), to name a few. These words are influenced by Arabic language, and to this day, for example, the pillow in both Arabic and Spanish is "almohada. مِخَدّة" Why?
In the world history class, you might have learned about "La Reconquista". Around 700 AD, the Iberia penninsula was prodominantly an Islamic country, ruled by muslim people. However from 711 AD until 1492 for 7 centuries, little by little the Christian kingdom reclaimed the Iberian territory. In January 1492, the Catholic Monarchs (Isabela y Fernando) kicked out the muslims, together with Jewish people (los judios), demanding all the people on this land are to convert and practice catholic religion (also beginning of the infamous inquisition). The muslim people disappeared, but they left an influence on Spanish words in vocabulary, foods (moros y cristianos = dark beans and rice) and others, super hero Cid, arquitecture such as patio and fountain, and many more.
NOTE:
According to what I have heard from my Saudi friend,
"Al" in arabic means "the".
Al - مِخَدّة. = al-mohada. (the pillow).
Do you know any Arabic speaking person's last name or Arabic word that you have heard before?
(Al-Ladin, Al-Quaeda, Algebra, Alquemista, alcohol ....)
and
"bin" in Arabic means "son of ...." --> Bin-Ladin, (just in case you wondered)
- As a wrap up the chapter, please take the vocabulary quiz (1 - 20 questions) (40 points) . You will hear the Spanish, and you will write both in Spanish (what you hear exactly with accent mark and spelling), and in English (the meaning of that word).
- El guiá de estudio para el Examen de los capítulos 3 y 4 (100)
¡Estudia mucho! y ¡buena suerte!
10. EL EXAMEN DE LOS CAPÍTULOS 3 y 4
- Please take a combined exam on Chapter 3 and 4 (100 points)
