MU Japan Coordinator Akiko Praylow, Local Japanese ladies Kumiko, Natsumi, Chika came to our school to present Koto preformance. With PPT slide, we have learned about this instrument called Koto. The natural wood pattern on Koto represents the scales of dragon. There are many ways to stroke Koto to produce different kinds of sounds.
After the basic Koto information, Akiko told an old story (from around 1960s) called Hanasaki-yama, accompanied by Koto music.
My students were fascinated the sound of Koto that they have never heard in their life. Some parts of story was a little difficult to hear, but they said they understood . The storyline is here (hanasakiyama) .
After the applaudes, some students were allowed to touch/play Koto.
Does anyone recoreded the sound of koto? please share with me? (from youtube sample

Sushi making planning was nerve wrecking because the students were supposed to contribute assigned ingredients.
Some students skipped their lunch so that they can eat Sushi. 30 students want to make sushi with only 5 sushi making station, but
at least we were able to make 2 sushi rolls per person. Japanese ladies also helped me /supervised students how to make sushi.
The great caution went to 1) rice is sticky, so if you see rice on the floor, pick it up even if it is not yours. Do not step on it. 2) keep an eye on 4 knives. (per injury or disappearance). Some students discovered that they did not like sushi (but at least they tried ). Other students LOVED. I do not know HOW Mrs. Wrights teach so many students at one time how to cook food. It was certainly difficult with 30 students. Exhasting day for planners, but it was a great day for all the partcipants.
Thank you for all the staff and students at SVHS. You rock!
